Forum Freelance Fund & Portenier Human Rights Bursaries
The Forum’s Forum Freelance Fund (FFF) provides bursaries to help Canadian freelancers and foreign freelancers working for Canadian media to attend hostile environment and first aid training courses (HEFAT). Our program continues to evolve, making it more flexible to meet freelancers' changing needs. Contact us anytime at info@journalismforum.ca if you would like to discuss.
* Applications for FFF training bursaries are now open on a continuous basis, year-round.
* Applications for Portenier Human Rights Bursaries are now also open on a continuous basis.
* With HEFAT still the main focus, the fund now also considers requests for help with other safety-related training needs.
A standing jury with a majority of independent members considers applications as they come in and provides applicants with timely responses.
The jury determines all conditions of bursaries according to the specific circumstances. This includes deciding the amount of each bursary and the time-frame in which training must be completed.
While we retain and expand our list of approved course providers - soon expected to include one offering courses in French - the jury also has flexibility to work with the Forum’s ACOS Alliance partners around the world, such as the Rory Peck Trust and the Committee to Protect Journalists, to create innovative solutions for particular needs.
All of the Forum’s FFF and Portenier bursaries have been, and will continue to be, offered in co-operation with the Rory Peck Trust (RPT). Our list of approved course providers currently: AKE, Blue Mountain Group, Dart Centre at Columbia Journalism School, First Option, Global Journalist Security, Instinct Group, Pilgrims Group, Remote Trauma, SEPAR International and Tundra Group. This list is reviewed from time to time. The latest addition, Instinct Group, offers HEAT courses in French in Quebec.
In the new configuration of the FFF, courses may also be arranged or conducted on an occasional basis by our fellow member organizations within the ACOS Alliance.
